Me – a teenager?
If she were to appear before me here, now, suddenly,
should I perhaps greet her as a loved one,
even though she is a stranger to me and far away?
Wisława Szymborska
translated by Pietro Marchesani
from “Due punti/Qui”, Libri Scheiwiller, 2010
Wisława Szymborska’s poem reflects the distance between the teenage girl and her adult self: the gap, the sense of strangeness and distance, but also of belonging.
A theme far removed from the conventional world of art, uncomfortable, yet of great interest and engagement for an audience of all generations, whether or not they are accustomed to attending artistic events.
The ‘adolescence’ project draws inspiration from this period of great change in everyone’s life. 122 artists from the Women Visual Artists Database, hailing from all over the world, were invited to reflect on this unique experience, drawing on their own personal experiences or those of others.
Mi affido all’aria e all’incanto dell’immaginazione
e in quell’abbandono scopro la libertà.
Mi accorgo allora di essere sbocciata:
non so quando, né come,
ma la luce – ora – mi appartiene.
Ellen G.
